EC Takes Airlines To Task Over Online Ticketing Practices
by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

24 December 2003

It emerged last week that the European Union is investigating the sale of airline tickets online, following complaints from "several hundred" EU citizens over price discrepancies.

According to EU spokesman, Gilles Gantelet, the prices of airline tickets purchased over the internet can vary by as much as 300%, depending on the place of residence of the purchaser.

"We are asking the airlines to explain the practices," he announced.

The 18 airlines accused of violating EU single market rules by pricing their tickets in this manner have until February 29 to respond to the allegations.

However, Mr Gantelet admitted that the European Commission can do little to sanction the firms in this case, explaining that:

"In part this is about naming and shaming the airlines."
