Speaking at the weekend, a spokesman for the Cypriot government commented on measures that are being taken to achieve reunification within the country.
“The reunification of our homeland can be achieved in the framework of
a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship
and a single international personality, as set out in the relevant United Nations
resolutions," Stefanos Stefanou argued.
“This is the basis of the negotiation, which has been set at the meetings
that have taken place so far between Mr Christofias and Mr Talat," Mr Stefanou added.
Mr Stefanou further stated that the policy of President Christofias on the Cyprus
problem, when he assumed the Presidency of the Republic last February, was consistency
with principles and undertaking initiatives with the basic aim of
breaking the stalemates and deadlocks which consolidate the partition of the island. He argued that:
“With the initiatives that the President has undertaken, in a short period
of time, the negative climate that was unjustly created against us was reversed
and the international community now credits us with readiness and good will
for the solution of the Cyprus problem. At the same time the termination of
immobility and the start of a dialogue between the two Cypriot communities on
the level of the Working Groups and the Technical Committees were achieved."
“The aim of the dialogue”, he stressed “is to prepare the
ground for direct talks between the President of the Republic and the Turkish
Cypriot leader in order to achieve a comprehensive solution in Cyprus."
