Cyprus: Bill Lodged For Telecoms Liberalisation
By Lisa Ugur, Tax-news.com, London

22 December 2000

Under the proposals of a Bill lodged in the Cyprus parliament this month as part of measures aimed at liberalising the island's telecommunications sector and harmonising local law with that of the EU, a regulator will be appointed for the telecoms and postal industries,

The regulator will include amongst their responsibilities the granting of new telecoms and postal licences and the authorisation of telecommunications networks & services.

The regulator is to be appointed for a six-year term and will determine the procedures for granting licences for telecommunications and postal services and the creation of telecommunication and postal networks.

The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) will cease to have a regulatory role since this will now be transferred to the new regulator, who is required to be independent of the Government, the CYTA and other telecommunications and postal service firms.
