CEPA Will Allow Film-Makers Access To Huge Chinese Market Says Seminar
by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

01 December 2003

Canadian film professionals were told last week how the recent signature of the CEPA agreement between Hong Kong and the mainland opens up the possibility of tapping the huge Chinese market via partnerships with Hong Kong firms.

At a seminar held in Toronto entitled 'Hong Kong: Gateway to China's 1.3 Billion Audience', Mr Bassanio So, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) explained to Canadian film directors, producers and professionals in the local film industry, how Canadian film companies can capitalise on the tremendous business opportunities presented by CEPA allowing films co-produced with Hong Kong to enjoy quota-free and unlimited access to the mainland film market starting from January 1, 2004.

Mr So explained how the relaxation of the co-production requirements on film-making paves the way for overseas film companies, including those in Canada, to gain a foothold in mainland China.

Other panelists at last week’s seminar included Harriet Heller, Senior Investment Analyst of Telefilm Canada; Ricky Chan, a veteran Hong Kong producer, and Anita Lee, the Film Festival President and Co-founder of the Reel Asian as the moderator.
