North Rock Communications, Transact Limited and KeyTech have announced the
formation of a consortium for the purposes of applying for a license to build
and operate an international telecommunications submarine cable facility between
Bermuda and the USA.
The consortium represents all three of Bermuda’s major internet service
providers as KeyTech is the 100% owner of Logic Communications. The companies
have jointly registered their intent to participate in the tender process to
the Ministry of the Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce.
“We are working together in this tender process because international
connectivity is critical to all our customers,” said Vicki Coelho of North
Rock Communications. Financing for the cable facility will be provided by the
consortium members.
The Bermudian consortium urged the Ministry of Environment Telecommunications
and E-Commerce to ensure that the tender process is completed in a timely manner.
“Bermuda requires a redundant offshore cable system and additional capacity
and the opportunity to build this as a Bermudian-owned venture is the right
thing to do,” says Bill Dickinson of Transact Limited.
The consortium said that the new cable will continue to position Bermuda as
a leading jurisdiction with state of the art telecommunications infrastructure.
