The Central Bank of The Bahamas has announced the appointment of a former senior
official with the United Kingdom Financial Services Authority (FSA) as Inspector
of Banks and Trust Companies.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Stanislaw J. Bereza served as a Senior Relationship
Manager with the FSA/Bank of England, where his employment spanned a period
of 13 years and eight months. Most recently, he was responsible for the supervision
of the London based operations of a number of major international investment
and commercial banks. He also represented the FSA on the Senior Supervisors
Group convened to evaluate the effectiveness of current risk management practices
during the recent financial market turbulence.
During his tenure with the FSA Mr. Bereza held a number of other positions
including: project manager for the FSA team responsible for the development
of the FSA’s industry-wide risk assessment framework for all UK authorized
firms; Senior Manager and Head of the FSA’s Traded Markets Department
and Senior Manager, Emerging Markets Department of the Bank Supervision Division
of the FSA during which time he participated in World Bank/IMF missions focused
on bank restructuring and the development of banking supervision for the Ukraine,
Latvia, Estonia and Indonesia.
Mr. Bereza’s international work experience also includes a two-year posting
as a Financial Specialist in the Financial Sector Development Division of the
World Bank, Washington, DC, where he worked on a number of bank restructuring
and institutional development projects in emerging markets.
During the period 1990 to 1992, Mr. Bereza was seconded to the Ministry of
Finance of Poland/National Bank of Poland as the UK Government “Know How
Fund” Advisor to assist the Polish authorities in the restructuring of
state owned banks and the development of the banking supervision regime. He
has also held several key positions at Barclay’s Bank PLC, including Senior
Manager in the Capital Efficiency Team and UK Head of Balance Sheet Management
where his main responsibilities included the development of risk management
policies and procedures and responses to regulatory requirements and corporate
planning.
Mr. Bereza holds both a Bachelor and Master of Science in economics from the
London School of Economics and Queen Mary College, University of London, respectively.
