BVI To Develop New Airport
by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

10 July 2008

British Virgin Islands leader Ralph T. O’Neal has signed a contract with British firm Halcrow Group for the re-development of the airstrip on the island of Virgin Gorda into a new airport.

The airport will replace an airstrip originally constructed in the 1960s by the owners of Little Dix Bay Hotel, who owned and operated the facility as a private entity up until the late 1990s when it was purchased by the BVI government. The airport will be brought up to international standards and be capable of accommodating 19-seater aircraft.

In a ceremony to mark the signature of the contract last month, Premier O'Neal said that the government has placed "its trust and confidence" in Halcrow Group, and he expressed his belief that the British company will deliver.

Halcrow group is one of the leading consultancies in the transportation, water and power, maritime and property construction sectors. The company has had experience of developing aviation facilities in the Caribbean, having previously developed airstrips in Monsterrat, Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
