Australian Green Party Play Down Tax Cuts
The newly re-elected leader of the Australian Green Party, Bob Brown, has this
week cast criticism over the Labor government's proposals to implement a series
of tax cuts estimated to cost in the region of AU$31 billion.
Speaking earlier in the week, according to a report in The Australian, Senator
Brown said that although his party would keep proposed tax breaks for lower
income taxpayers, proposals benefitting what he dubbed "the big end of
town" could be scrapped, as there are other areas of the economy which
should be considered a greater priority. Mr. Brown suggested that rather than pour $31 billion into cutting taxes, the
money could instead be used to improve the country's health and education systems,
as well as investing more into mitigating the effects of climate change. "We are not here to endorse what Labor does," Brown announced, according
to an ABC News report, continuing: "We are here to take them on and get this country to the forefront of
world politics in meeting the greatest challenge to humanity, not just for this
century, but ostensibly so far in history, which is climate change." .
