Ansbacher Names Begin To Appear In Press Reports

While the Irish Government continued to refuse to name the 120 people mentioned in the Ansbacher report (described by the Tanaiste as 'suspects' this week), the media began to mention some of the more high profile individuals concerned, including former EU Commissioner and WTO chief Peter Sutherland, the Chairman of Independent News and Media Tony O'Reilly, MEP Mary Banotti and businessman Jim Culliton. Mr Culliton, who refused to comment when by coincidence he appeared at the DIRT enquiry last week as ex-Chairman of AIB, resigned from three high-profile boards on Wednesday; but many of the other publicly-named people denied wrong-doing, including the three mentioned above - Dr O'Reilly was reported to have issued libel proceedings against the newspaper which carried his name. Of course, even if a person has been named in the report, and even if they did have dealings with Ansbacher or another offshore bank, these could have been perfectly legitimate and in many cases no doubt were.
