ATO E-Tax Service Reaches 1 Million Milestone
by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

28 August 2007

The Australian Tax Office's 'e-tax' service has reached a milestone with more than one million people already lodging their tax returns online, a 20% increase on the same time last year, the ATO has announced.

Assistant Tax Commissioner Chris Mobbs said that so far 1,056,750 people have lodged using e-tax.

“In 2006 over 1.6 million people lodged using e-tax and we are well on track to exceed that figure this year,” said Mr Mobbs.

“An increase in the number of people using e-tax tells us that people find it useful and convenient to lodge their income tax returns online.

“It is also pleasing to see more than 662,000 calls on available data using the pre-filling service so far.”

Pre-filling enables the downloading of information from third parties directly into a tax return, including bank interest, dividends, and Centrelink payments.

“Pre-filling has been expanded this year to make it even easier for people to complete their tax return.”

“We encourage people to carefully review all their information before submitting their tax return to ensure they have included all income and claimed all deductions and rebates to which they are entitled, and e-tax will help you to do that,” said Mr Mobbs.
