ACCA Says UK Accountants Reject EU Tax Harmonisation by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London 21 November 2001 A recent poll conducted by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has revealed that although 57% of its members are against any moves towards tax harmonisation across the European Union, 61% of those surveyed believe that it will occur regardless of public opinion. The head of taxation at the ACCA, Chas Roy-Chowdhury explained: 'There are still certain member countries which are committed to high taxation and would like to see the same tax requirement in neighbouring states.' The ACCA suggested that rather than looking towards new harmonisation measures, the European Commission should focus on remedying problem areas in existing national and Union wide tax regimes, such as the collection of intra-EU VAT, and the problem of levying VAT on internet downloadable services. .
